Why Does Everyone Hate Atlantica?!?
![]() |
| Ariel is about to commit suicide because she wasn't a popular Disney Princess in the Kingdom Hearts games. |
Or perhaps the header could be "Am I the only human being in the Universe who DOESN'T hate visiting Atlantica in Kingdom Hearts and wish that they could do it again in KH3?":(
Okay, before you tar and feather me for being a gooseberry, let me state a few things: I didn't like the Little Mermaid movie at all. When I had to watch it during one of my high school classes as everyone wanted to watch it, I sort of buried my face in my arms so I didn't have to see what was on the screen.

| I apologize for using this pic - I know it belongs on a video thumbnail but it fit the whole rant |
But why the hatred for it in Kingdom Hearts? I'm not talking about the time you visit in KH2 - My hatred for Ice Cream Beat in BBSFM shows that not a lot of people love rhythm-based mini games, although I still enjoyed the songs in KH2 Atlantica and did them much better than Ice Cream Beat.
We won't discuss KH2 Atlantica as it wasn't really a world to explore, more like a series of mini-games like Ice Cream Beat revolving around the story of the Little Mermaid film(which I stated I didn't like, although now that I had to endure the songs, I really enjoy them).
Let's talk about the fuel that fired the flames... KH1 Atlantica.
This is what everyone hated - the whole movement and combat system - you were one a 2D plane and could only move with jetplane controls - up, down, forward and rotate. Combat was very clunky; you couldn't do any Summons(they'd drown underwater ;P) and you were forced to resort to burning magic to do any damage unless you enjoyed swimming about and flailing with your Keyblade!
I admit that was a poor way to do underwater controls...but to paraphrase Saix: Do you hate it? Well...
Direct your hatred towards KH2 Agrabah's ruins! Yep, they didn't learn their lessons and used the EXACT SAME CONTROLS in the second part of Agrabah in KH2!!!
True, you could use Limit Form and all that, but other than that it's the same situation.
I think the reason that Nomura decided to make Atlantica a non-combat world like 100-Acre Wood was because it would be a hassle to translate the battle system to that world and he had a story going already(although he never explained how Ursula came back to life; did Maleficent revive her like she did Oogie?) and Drive Forms would be a problem to deal with underwater.
It's true that The Little Mermaid lost out on a lot(from this fan art we could have seen what would have been if Ariel had been a Princess of Heart - I didn't realize there were a lot more characters in the movie that just the original ones) and with KH3 focusing on modern CGI movies now(the worlds revealed are from CGI-animated movies, Tangled and Big Hero 6) so the chances of having classic Disney are slim(though I wouldn't put it past them to render a few), but enough with the hate.
You can ban me if you want, I don't care. It will prove that I am the only living human being who enjoyed being in Ariel's underwater world in Kingdom Hearts... even if farming for those damn Frost Gems was so annoying! :p
